La présence de madrigaux d’Usper dans l’anthologie de Kaufmann \"De’fiori del giardino di diversi excellentissimi autori, seconda parte\" (Nuremberg 1604 ; RISM 1604/12) et dans celle de Borchgrevinck, intitulée \"Giardino novo bellissimo\" (Copenhague 1606 ; RISM 1606/5), montre qu’il égala rapidement les plus éminents maîtres italiens qui promouvaient le nouvel art baroque parmi les « ultramontains ». La modération d’Usper dans le 'stile affetto', style madrigaliste en vogue à l’époque, fait que ses compositions de 1604 sont très harmonieuses. Pourtant, ces madrigaux laissent transparaître un procédé typique du premier baroque vénitien, qui consistait à jouer avec l’espace sonore. Des effets insolites de contraste entre les parties chantées, ainsi que des registres vocaux inhabituels, montrent qu’Usper non seulement se préoccupa de la lisibilité formelle de ses oeuvres, comme dans son recueil \"Ricercari et arie francesi\" dix ans auparavant, mais qu’il commença aussi à examiner des domaines nouveaux, encore inexplorés, du chromatisme sonore. Il emprunta ses textes à la poésie amoureuse et pastorale, mais il semble qu’il ne fut pas fasciné par les poètes connus de son époque : ainsi ne mit-il en musique aucun poème de Marino. La sélection des textes des poètes présents dans son recueil de 1604 permet d’entrevoir les livres auxquels il puisa. Il constitue un exemple de première importance de la réception de la polyphonie hollandaise en Dalmatie. À la différence des madrigaux de 1562 et de ceux du recueil de 1563, ces motets sont inspirés de procédés de composition traditionnels. Ils sont pourtant beaucoup plus riches en rythmes que les compositions profanes de Skjavetić. La plupart de ces motets sont précédés de brèves annotations précisant le type de contrepoint ou de canon. Du point de vue formel, ils ont soit une ligne mélodique continue, sans répétitions strophiques, soit des variantes simples de forme binaire (AB ou AB/CB). Dotés d’un chromatisme rare et d’une structure contrapuntique très complexe, construits selon des flux mélodiques calmes et sans recherche, ces motets représentent un excellent exemple du style de la prima prattica. Le premier livre de motets de Skjavetić constitue l’un des plus importants monuments de la musique croate de la Renaissance.
